ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a printmaker/painter, and my practice has long been concerned with surface texture and non-traditional methods of printing. Technically, I investigate the sensual properties of ink on paper through a unique process of relief monotypes.

My monotypes are a hybrid of painting, printmaking, digital imagery and photographic processes, reinventing traditional forms of printing with modern technology. I scan my original photographs and refine the digital files which are then cut out of wood using a laser cutter. I print the inked wood shapes multiple times, resulting in a one-of-a-kind print. Some pieces incorporate an ink wash while other incorporate cyanotype.

I think of my work as organic abstraction and work with forms and structures found in nature, drawing inspiration from landscapes. Specifically, I investigate the transparency of light coming through foliage, leaves and branches, as did the Impressionists who capture light in a moment of time. My goal is to create images that reach beyond the literal to a place of contemplation.

A print can go too far and collapse or balance on the edge of beauty. That edge is what keeps me working.
